Scholarships

The Carlton Simons Scholarship

The Carlton Simons Scholarship is named for our long time member and Treasurer since 1979.  He was elevated to Honorary Member status in 1990 and was awarded the Port of Charleston’s Member of the year award in 1994.  In 1995 he was selected the Southeast Region Member of the year.   He received the International Propeller Club Member of the Year award in Houston, Texas in 1999, which was the first International award for a member from Charleston.   In 2018 he again received the local Member of the Year award.   This $3,500 scholarship is presented each year in May at the National Transportation Week Banquet.  Any student who is interested in pursuing a career in the transportation & logistics industry or is a family member of a current or past member of the transportation & logistics community may submit an application for consideration (submission instructions included in the attached application).

The Gitta Wombwell Scholarship

The Gitta Wombwell Scholarship is awarded in honor of a fixture in the  Propeller Club and indeed, the entire Charleston Waterfront.   Few individuals have contributed as much to the success of our Community.  Gitta has been a member of the Propeller Club of Charleston for more than 20 years, serving as Port Secretary from 1997 to 2005, First Vice President from 2006-2008 and she currently serves as Secretary for the Charleston Club and as a Director for the International Propeller Club.  Gitta proudly presided as the first woman President of the Propeller Club Port of Charleston from 2008-2010.  She was previously selected as 2001 Member of the Year in the Southeast Region, earned recognition as the region’s Maritime Person of the Year in 2010 and was selected as the International Propeller Club’s Member of the Year in 2013.  In addition to her contributions to the Propeller Club, she has been active throughout the maritime community in Charleston, and in 2012 was awarded the Beacon Award by the Maritime Association of South Carolina.

The College of Charleston Rotterdam Scholarship

The College of Charleston Rotterdam Scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving student in the CofC Logistics and Transportation Program to assist with the cost of the annual trip to Rotterdam.
